As many of you will now be aware, Derbyshire County Council is proposing to close Glossop Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). I want to be absolutely clear: I strongly oppose this proposal. Whilst I understand the serious financial challenges facing the County Council, closing this site would be a false economy.
Glossop HWRC plays a crucial role for households across Padfield, Hadfield and Glossopdale. Its closure would create real difficulties for residents and risks a range of unintended social, environmental and financial consequences.
Derbyshire County Council has now launched its consultation on the proposed closure of Glossop HWRC. Please take the time to complete it and share the link so as many people as possible can have their say:

Anyone wishing to have their say should complete the online questionnaire before the closing date of Thursday 23rd July 2026. Paper copies can be printed from Derbyshire County Council's website, are available at all Derbyshire libraries, or can be requested by contacting Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. Completed forms can be returned via Freepost or dropped into any Derbyshire library.

There are some important points to consider when responding (this is by no means an exhaustive list):
- Reduced access to a local HWRC risks increased fly-tipping, bringing environmental damage, visual blight and clean-up costs that ultimately fall on borough and district councils, landowners, and the wider community which will likely outweigh any proposed savings in the long-term
. - The claim that Glossop is the “least used” site, or that most residents only attend once or twice a year, does not reflect the lived experience of many local households. For a significant number of people, this is a regularly used and practical service that forms part of how they responsibly manage everyday waste and recycling.
- Figures suggesting high levels of non-Derbyshire use are based on incomplete registration data and remain unproven, meaning the issue may be overstated. If cross-border use is the concern, it’s fair to ask why more proportionate measures, such as permits or charging, haven’t been fully explored before proposing closure.
- If the site closes, local residents will be expected to travel to Buxton (a round trip of over 30 miles) which will only add to congestion, increase emissions, and place additional pressure on neighbouring sites. Glossopdale’s geography only compounds this, making journeys to Buxton particularly challenging and at times unreliable, especially during the winter months.
- Not everyone can make that journey. For households without access to a car, those reliant on public transport, older residents, families, and people with mobility issues, travelling to Buxton is often unrealistic. In practice, this risks effectively removing access to the service altogether for some residents and creating clear inequalities in access.
- The £500,000 investment figure should be considered in context; the long-term benefits of keeping the site open outweigh any short-term savings.
I would strongly encourage residents to engage with the consultation, make their voices heard, and help demonstrate the strength of feeling locally.
Let’s tell Derbyshire County Council to rethink this short-sighted proposal.
