Padfield Residents’ Society Treasure Hunt 2024
We have written this to get people out and about in the village over the summer and hopefully learn a bit about our village’s history at the same time
There are no prizes, it’s just a bit of fun
We hope you enjoy doing this as much as we have enjoyed putting it together
1. To get from Hadfield to Padfield you will have to pass under me. What am I?
THE BRIDGE
2. Not going too far there's an entrance to a car park which leads to me. I used to be part of the Manchester to Sheffield railway line, now I am a popular place to walk. What am I now called?
THE LONGDENDALE TRAIL
3. Walk along me but only a short way, you will come to an exit to a house named because it overlooks me. What is its name?
TRAIL VIEW
4. At the end of this short road turn left and start walking up into the village. On your right-hand side, you will see me. I used to be much larger than I am now.
I was built in 1874, and in 1961 I lost some of my height, I now house a factory, what did I used to be called (Clue, there is a local street named after me)
RHODES TOP MILL
5. Continue up the road to find me next, I am a house with a cross on, what number am I?
22
6. Stay on the same street to find me. When I opened in 1880, I was a Co-Op and have more recently been an art gallery, now I’m a house, what number am I?
99
7. Turn round and head back slightly, then up the steep hill. I am found halfway up this hill. I was built by the Rhodes family and opened 23rd May 1887 for the children of the Rhodes family employees and am on a street named after the family. To this day I am still here for the children of Padfield. What am I?
PADFIELD COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL
8. Stay on this road a little further for the next clue. When I opened in 1881, I was a Wesleyan Methodist Church, I am still a grand building but now have a residential purpose – What is my new name?
CHAPEL LOFTS
9. Next go up to the top of this hill, I am on the junction on your left and have the oldest Date Stone in the village. What year does it state that I was built?
1669
10. From here turn right and head up this ‘main’ road. I am a white cottage on the left. What do I have on my roof?
DRAGON
11. Now we need to get to Little Padfield, I will take you there. My street name is something you do to some fruit. What is it?
PEEL STREET
RRRRRRR
12. When you get to Little Padfield you will find me, I am the place the people of this little village used to get their water from. What am I?
THE WELL
13. As you walk out of Little Padfield you will find me, I am the hill where Padfield holds their annual Coal Race. What is my name?
REDGATE
14. Now you are to head towards where the children play. Can you read the legend on the board that mentions the answer to the last question? What was the name of the person who died?
ALMAN
15. Further on up the road you come to a place of worship. What is this place known as?
PADFiELD CONGREGAIONAL CHAPEL
16. The last place on this adventure round the village, I was originally opened in 1845 as The Temple Inn, being renamed just a year later. I got my new name from a Prime Minister, and it still has this name today. What’s my name?
THE PEELS
17. Call in here and write down the challenge before you. No fear, you don't have to do this, but it would be great fun if you did.
THE HOLE IN THE WALL
Well done. Now you have finished you might want to stop in this last clue for some well-earned refreshment
Answers will be revealed at the end of August
