Residents' consultation for proposed changes to speed limits beyond village boundaries
The Residents' Society would like to go through a consultation process with residents of the village with aims of proposing some amendments beyond the 20 mph speed limits already in place. Every resident of Padfield is welcome to join in and comment on the proposals that we discuss in more detail below.
Firstly, to avoid any confusion, we should make it clear that the Residents' Society are unable to make direct changes, however, they do propose to lobby the Highways Department to effect changes that will work towards improving the current speed limits. Padfield residents may or may not be aware that many vehicles travelling into and through the village do so at speeds in excess of the current speed limits.
All roads within the village are 20mph but the roads entering the village have speeds of 30mph and even 40mph. Many vehicles are travelling far too fast when entering the village and pedestrians of all ages crossing these roads are at greater risk. It is hoped this consultation will be a useful tool in bringing together a community dedicated to making the roads, and indeed the village, a safer place. In order to do that we would like to get people's opinions about whether they agree that the implementation of these proposals would be useful, and to find out if anyone has any other ideas. That is primarily what this consultation is about.
Basically, there are 4 areas on which we have focused our proposals:

Basically, there are 4 areas on which we have focused our proposals:
- Near the Old Liberal Club: Travelling north-west from the village, Padfield Main Road used to be a 30mph zone, but that was changed to 40mph when the cobble strip was introduced, despite our protests. We would like the 30mph limit to be reinstated. As traffic enters the village travelling uphill from Rough Fields, we suggest that the 20mph signs are moved away from the foliage that regularly shields them from view. We would also like to see some warning signs about the impending 20mph zone situated along the approach.
- Near the old Water Treatment Plant (now Quarry House): At the other end of Padfield Main Road, travelling north-east from the village we propose that the 30mph limit is extended to allow drivers more time to slow down. We would also like to see some warning signs about the impending 20mph zone situated along the approach.
- Close to the bottom of Redgate: We would like the 20mph limit to be extended onto the lower part of Redgate itself. This would make the 20 signs visible to drivers as they drive down the hill and may prevent drivers speeding around the sharp bend.
- Close to the old railway bridge on Platt Street: We would propose that the 20mph limit is extended as far as the cobbled section under the railway bridge so that drivers are already travelling slowly before they meet the left-hand bend into the village.
Please let us know your thoughts, comments, suggestions, ideas by using the comments section below. This is very much a community effort and every resident of Padfield has a say regardless of their personal views. The Residents' Society would like to gather a broad spectrum of comments from as many residents as possible before putting forward proposals for implementing amendments to the speed limits outside of the village (shown in red on the map).
