Archives: Village news and events from 2016
Throughout the year Padfield village is home to a variety of activities and events. Below is a listing of news items, activities and events that took place in 2016. They are shown in reverse date order.
Messy Chapel Christingle party
The popular event of last year, which saw over 3o children and parents attending, returns again on Sunday 11 December. This year there will be lots of games and craft activities to enjoy. Why not have a go at icing Christmas biscuits, making Christmas decorations, joining in a treasure hunt for goodies hidden throughout the chapel, or decorate and make presents for the crib. Games will be included and seasonal snacks such as sausage rolls and mince pies will also be provided. The party will end with Christingles by candle light. A great event for all the family. Everyone welcome.
Chapel Christmas Fair
The annual Residents' Society / Chapel Christmas Fair at the Chapel on Temple Street will take place between 2pm - 4 pm on Saturday 26 November. Anyone who wants a stall should contact Janis on the number above as soon as possible. The Residents' Society will have a 'good as new' Christmas stall. Anyone who has items for our stall can bring them on the day - we will be most appreciative.
The Tuesday Club is going to Wentworth
Our next Tuesday Club trip will be on Thursday 24 November. We'll be going to Wentworth for Christmas shopping. We should have spare spaces in the two minibuses if anyone wants to join us. Please phone Janis on 01457 861542. The only charge will be for transport and if you're interested, Janis will provide further details on request.
Events for the festive period
15 November, 2016
Over the next few weeks our little village will see a few events takes place from Christmas fairs to Christmas dinners and, of course, the annual visit by Father Christmas himself! To find out more about these events head on over to the what's on now page or check out the calendar. We'll update these pages if we find out more. |

Another successful Coal Race
11 September, 2016
There's always that moment when you wonder what the weather is going to do for a planned event. Rain would literally put a damper on things, however, this year's Coal Race was blessed with blue skies and glorious sunshine to really draw a crowd.
After a slight delay to the race the runners were under way, all timed by Teckla, Rachel and Kerry. In the usual coal race fashion there were several heats to accommodate the many runners that took part. Redgate saw a throng of people align the drystone walls, engaged in conversation, enjoying the sun and readying themselves with cameras and phones to take some action shots. Everyone cheered and applauded the runners as they passed by.
After the race there was a presentation where every participant received a bottle of beer from Howard Town Brewery and the champions received the coveted Coal Race trophies.
2016's Coal Race was a great success and our thanks go to all the runners, the spectators and, of course, the fantastic organisers, Dominic and Rachel Bradbury. More details will be included along with the race results and an extended gallery of photos on the main Coal Race page soon. But for now here are some photos of the event.

Just a reminder folks that the Coal Race is set to go full steam ahead on Sunday 11th September. Fell Race / Coal Race
With the success of last year's coal race, this year's event has been penciled-in for Sunday 11 September. Make a note of this date in your diaries. It would be great to see as many people as possible cheer and support those taking part. Tell your friends and family to come along and be a part of something unique and, if you feel up to the challenge, why not put your name forward for the race itself. You can do so by registering on the day. We'll post more details about the event as soon as we are updated.
After the race we'll post the results and photos on the main Padfield Coal Race page.
Stay tuned, there will be more on this in due course.

Coal Race nostalgia
23 August, 2016
For long-time residents of our lovely village, recalling the very first Plum Fair of 1994 will be a distant, but enjoyable memory. Even for the organisers, who tirelessly volunteered their time to make the the event a great success, will recall the great times they had in bringing together the community for a truly unique event. Below, we have been lucky to receive three photos of the Coal Race from that year.
Janis Birchall, one of the organisers said: "We were all so busy we didn't think about photos! But the Coal Race was the last event of the day, and I guess I was feeling a bit more relaxed and took the time to take some photos!"

It is, of course, a shame the Plum Fair came to an end in 2013 but that does not necessarily mean it has ended for good. The event is in need of new volunteers but for now, we are excited that the Coal Race was brought back in 2015 and will return again this year on Sunday 11th September so make a note of it your diaries and calendars!
Another Tuesday Club success
23 August, 2016
On Wednesday 17th August the Tuesday Club went along to Paradise Mill. It has a fine name but by all accounts it wasn't 'paradise' to work there. At the height of its production a quarter of the workforce was children, and life for all the workers was hard. The 21 people that went along, however, had a great day out. The tour was excellent and the 84 year old volunteer tour guide told the group many stories about days gone by and was very knowledgeable about the history of the mill. There was plenty of 'hands-on' experience for all, and a beautiful textile art display too. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed tea and cakes and wandered into town for lunch. The driver from Jones coaches took good care of everyone on the journey there and back, and all participants had a good day.

30 July, 2016
We just thought you might like to know that the next Tuesday Club outing is going to the Macclesfield Silk Mill and Museum on Wednesday 17th August. The finer details haven't quite been finalised yet, but according to our organiser, Janis, the departure time will be around 10am and the price will be in the region of £15. That price includes transport, coffee and cake on arrival, an hour's guided tour of the mill and an hour in the museum. If your appetite insists that you have a spot of lunch, then that will cost extra.
We will update you with more information soon so watch this space for further details. If anyone is interested in going would you please let Janis know as soon as possible or by Monday 8th August at the latest. You can contact her by phone on 01457 861542 or by email. Padfield Chapel chase
13 July, 2016
Last August Major (Acting) Alexander Dodd took up a gruelling challenge to raise sponsorship money for Padfield Congregational Chapel. Starting at 5am Alex ran over 25 miles in full military kit, boots & pack weighing 25 kg and even managed to attend Sunday Service afterwards.
The Congregational Chapel, which was 188 years old in June, is badly in need of renovation both external and internal. Dodd’s challenge raised much money from supporters and friends and that together with other fund raising activities and some very generous donations has helped urgent external works to near their completion during this year but there is more work to be done, in particular to the interior of the Chapel and further funds are needed in 2016.
This year Alex has initiated Padfield Chapel Chase. The event takes place from 9am (for pre Chase Registration) on Saturday 6th August. This is a much easier, more flexible version of the original challenge and is a fun event for the whole family and all abilities. Both runners and walkers are welcome to join in.
For the Chapel Chase each entrant undertakes to cover as many laps of the Padfield Triangle – the same route as Alex Dodd did last year – between 10am (actual race start) and 12 midday (official race end), although some of us may choose to end a little earlier! Each entrant collects a sponsor form before the race and it is up to him/her to gather a few sponsors, either per lap completed or simply for taking part. Sponsorship monies raised by each participant will then go to Padfield Congregational Chapel renovation fund and will play a really vital part in keeping the Chapel building functioning as an important central meeting place in Padfield Village.
Each entrant will receive a medal just for participating and there will be additional medals based on number of laps completed. After the event there will be refreshments in Padfield Congregational Chapel. The race starts on Padfield recreation ground and the route takes in a small part of Platt Street, Temple Street, a very small part of Padfield Main Road and Post Street back to Platt Street.
Sponsorship forms and more information can be collected by calling 01457 857329 or by mailing
[email protected]. Give us your name and address and we will drop you a form through your letterbox or by email.
Remember YOU can help Padfield Congregational Chapel remain a viable meeting place for the village. Join in for some community spirit - all ages and capabilities very, very welcome.

Padfielder petitions for safer Redgate
14 June, 2016
As many of you will know the situation regarding the poor state of Redgate has been cause for concern for some time. During the winter months the cold weather and heavy bouts of rain have only added to the deterioration of the road that, on an average day, sees a fair amount of traffic, either by villagers or traffic passing through from Hadfield.
It would seem that Padfielders have reported the worsening state of Redgate to Derbyshire County Council, the body responsible for our roads, via the report a road fault page. In addition to the complaints made to DCC, several mentions have also been logged on FixMyStreet.com.
The underlying problem lies with a drainage issue, which has caused some damage to the road by the constant flow of water above and underneath the road surface. DCC have made several patch fixes by filling in the larger pothole, however, because the issue is not being tackled at the root of the problem and with the traffic Redgate receives on a daily basis, the tarmac deteriorates almost as soon as it is laid. Other areas along Redgate that show surface deterioration and cracking have not been addressed, even in the short term. What is needed is a long-term fix where not only the drainage and pothole is fixed but the road surface is replaced in its entirety.

The state of the road now is getting to the point where it is extremely dangerous for both cars and bikes. This is when local resident Robin Barker, after having already contacting DCC, High Peak Borough Council and our MP, decided to tackle the situation and go one step further by creating an online petition on the change.org website. It has already garnered some interest and currently stands at 51 supporters as of 14 June, 2016.
It is in everyone's best interest that the deteriorating state of Redgate is addressed as soon as possible to ensure it does not deteriorate further and that no one is hurt as a result of the dangerous road surface. This can be aided if enough people voice their concerns. If you are interested in supporting the petition, you can do so by clicking the link above.

Afternoon Chapel Tea
On Saturday 11 June, Padfield Congregational Chapel wishes to thank the villagers of Padfield for all of their help and contributions to our Renovation Fundraising activities. This year building renovation work has taken place to damp proof the Vestry and remove damp rot caused by a pipe which had leaked into the building unnoticed for many years. This also included building work to seal the pipe, replastering, reflooring, repaint etc and included damp proofing work to the porch with new guttering and lovely new doors and glass.
There will be more work next week to carry out specialist clearance of the area under the stage at the front of the Chapel making it available for storage. The Church building is 188 years old this year and ongoing renovation work is much needed. On Sunday 12 June, there will be a service in the Chapel at 2.30pm (instead of the usual 10.45am) to celebrate the 188th anniversary of the chapel.
Under 16's Shuttle Run
The idea for the Padfield under 16's fancy dress shuttle run has been put forward for the possible date of Saturday 18 June. Each circuit of the village is half a mile and depending on age, entrants would complete 2, 4 or 6 circuits. The school will try and get sponsorship to provide drinking water. The Residents’ Society would supply the medals to all who finished.
There would be a small entry fee to cover some of the costs involved and we will need stewards/marshals to help out on the day so please get in touch with us if you feel you can spare some time. As we get more news regarding this event we'll update you about it here.

Floral Competition judges needed
19 May, 2016
We are looking for some judges for the floral competition. Would you be interested in having a go? It's simple and involves a pleasant walk around the village a few times during the summer (dates shown above) and you don't even need to know anything about plants. All we are interested in from you is your valued opinion about what looks pleasing. You can even choose your own times and days to go out. Each judge works independently and then sometime shortly after judging ceases, we amalgamate the scores at the end. We do hope you will volunteer.
Please contact us if you're interested in becoming a floral competition judge.

Previous years have seen some stunning floral displays. When the judges have decided on the winners, they will be announce on this site soon after and we'll include a special gallery of the winning displays.

Padfield spring clean
29 April, 2016
The annual village spring clean on Sunday 24 April went well despite the unfavourable weather that was bestowed upon the volunteers. Everyone met before hand on the recreation ground and during the course of the walk through the village, several bags of rubbish were collected.
As a small community it is surprising where it all comes from, especially when the streets always look clean and tidy, however, our trusty volunteers did a sterling job in collecting the litter and now the village is spick and span again until next year's spring clean.
Many thanks for all your help.

Young Villager of the Year
29 April, 2016
As you may have read earlier this year in the Padfield news (16 March) we were on the lookout for community minded youngsters in the village that have, in some way or another, helped other residents recently. We were keen to learn of individuals that took it upon themselves to run errands for someone or maybe help clear snow from the pavements.

1901 Census for Padfield available now
21 March, 2016
On 25 February we announce the Padfield 1901 census transcribing project. After logging quite a few computer hours transcribing the information from the 40 pages of original scanned images, we are please to announce that the transcript of the Padfield 1901 census is now available. In addition to the transcript there is some background information as well, which some may find useful. For those that may not know about the 1901 census, these brief introductions will provide a foundation to understanding what they were all about.
Another task on the to-do list is an occupations definitions list. This is merely to help make sense of some of the jobs you will notice in the census. Some are well-known and still very much in use today, others may seem a little archaic. We'll let you know when the definitions are complete.

Community bus 393 under threat
16 March, 2016
Derbyshire County Council is consulting on the future of bus services in the area. By 2020 the funding that is provided by Government for Derbyshire's subsidised local buses and community transport services will be a third lower than 2010. This means big cuts and the potential for local bus services to be stopped altogether.
The 393 that runs through Padfield is one of those services seriously under threat. The relatively small numbers of people using the bus service is still a significant proportion of the local population, many of which are elderly and/or disabled. Any reduction in service would cause significant difficulties for many of our residents. Many residents are unable to walk to nearby facilities and alternative methods of transport do not exist other than expensive taxis.
Derbyshire County Council are interested to hear what you think of their future plans for subsidised buses. Questionnaires are available from the local libraries and there is an online survey available at:
The above survey has been checked and works. Closing date for online responses is 17 April 2016.

The above survey has been checked and works. Closing date for online responses is 17 April 2016.
Young Villager of the Year
16 March, 2016
It's that time again. We are on the lookout for community minded youngsters in our village that have helped other residents recently. It could be anything from helping to clear the snow from the pavements and road or it could even be running errands for someone. Please do let us know because last year there was no award given as we didn't receive any nominations! We're sure there are some deserving candidates out there.
We're relying on you to let us know about them. The young villager must be under 18 years of age, and have demonstrated their helping of others in the wider community. Maybe they have done some fund-raising or given support to someone. Please let us know about them by 10 April 2016. They might win a cup and a cash prize.
There are a couple of ways to contact us to make a nomination. You can use our contact us page, phone Janis Birchall on 01457 861542, or even message her on Facebook via the Padfield page there.
The winner(s) will be decided at the Residents' Society meeting on 11 April. The award will be made at the AGM on 20 April.

First winter snow of 2016
5 March, 2016
It was great to see the winter snow finally arrive in Padfield before spring is upon us. Understandably, not everyone has a fondness of the long winter months, especially the snow and ice, which makes the simplest of tasks such as driving to work or walking to the shops seem like a chore.
However, some of our younger villagers (including a few older ones too) were out and about, embracing the cold by donning their wellies, wrapping up warm and having a little fun in the snowy blanket that covered everything as far as the eyes could see.
The weather was a little harsh, especially on the elevations around the village. The top of Redgate and all along the open expanse near Windy Harbour Farm had a biting cross wind and snow in places almost up to the knee! A few photos were taken for the website, which can be seen in the Padfield Winter gallery.

Annual General Meeting - Update
29 February, 2016
It has been confirmed that the AGM will take place on Wednesday 20 April at 7pm at the Chapel. It was suggested that rather than having a solo speaker we could have up to a dozen villagers talking about a selection of their photographs instead. This could make for an interesting, and different, evening.
The topic/subject of these photographs are not necessarily restricted to Padfield and could, in fact, be about anything of interest to each individual speaker. Depending on numbers the average allotted time will be roughly 5-10 minutes. If you are interested in taking part please contact Steve Gwilt on 01457 865891.

Floral Competition
29 February, 2016
It was agreed at the Residents' Society that the Padfield Floral Competition would run again this year. We all enjoy the stunning colours and compositions of our gardens, rockeries, borders, hanging baskets and window boxes. Judging will commence on 14 May and end on 27 August.

Under 16s Shuttle Run
29 February, 2016
The idea for the Padfield under 16's fancy dress shuttle run has been put forward for the possible date of Saturday 18 June. Each circuit of the village is half a mile and depending on age, entrants would complete 2, 4 or 6 circuits. The school will try and get sponsorship to provide drinking water. The Residents’ Society would supply the medals to all who finished.
There would be a small entry fee to cover some of the costs involved and we will need stewards/marshals to help out on the day so please get in touch with us if you feel you can spare some time. As we get more news regarding this event we'll update you about it here.

Fell Race / Coal Race
29 February, 2016
With the success of last year's coal race, this year's event has been penciled-in for Sunday 11 September. Make a note of this date in your diaries. It would be great to see as many people as possible cheer and support those taking part. More on this in due course.

Padfield Spring Clean
29 February, 2016
The Padfield Spring Clean is almost upon again. The success of last year's clean ensured a repeat this year in the hope that we, as a small community, strive to keep our village clean and tidy. We are aiming for this to take place on Sunday 24 April, so if you are interested in helping out, meet us on the recreation ground on Temple Street at 11:00am.

Summer Party, Maybe?
29 February, 2016
The idea of a village summer party was suggested and what a great idea it is! A village social gathering would a fantastic way to meet our neighbours and have a little fun in the process. Nothing as yet has been organised, however, this will be discussed at the next residents' meeting on Monday 14 March at the Peels Arms, 8:00pm. If you have any ideas, please do come along and let us know.

Padfield 1901 Census transcribing project
25 February, 2016
We have been lucky in obtaining copies of the 1901 Census that includes Padfield and some of the surrounding area. This particular part of the Civil Parish of Glossop was split into two enumeration districts, each of which record dwellings outside of the immediate Padfield area, for example, Brosscroft, Deep Clough and Torside.
Census schedules were given to every dwelling several days before the census took place. Each schedule was supposed to be filled in by the occupants of the dwellings and returned to the enumerator for recording in the enumerators' book. Those that could not write were filled in for them. The way the schedules were grouped meant that roads were often split between different folios and pages, having other roads listed in between. In many cases they did not run in order.
The 1901 Census of Padfield is now being transcribed, a slow and laborious task that will take one person a considerable amount of time to complete. However, the purpose of this project is to provide a linear listing of the dwellings in an excel document whereby each street will detail the dwellings in numerical order. This means during the transcribing process, several different folios/pages will be consulted to complete one street. Once Padfield Main Road is complete, Post Street will be next and so on until the whole of Padfield has been transcribed.
The data will then be uploaded and you will be able to view the document in it's entirety in a webpage. Whilst you can already perform free census searches on several different websites (a function that has been available for several years) in most cases, to see the full listing of a dwelling you will be required to pay a monthly or yearly subscription, or purchase credits. Searches such as these only provide the basic details of the person/s or dwelling you are searching for at any given time, not the village in its entirety.
We will update you with the progress of the project in due course and let you know when it will be available here.

Local resident's sketch in French newspapers
18 February, 2016
On 13 November 2015, a coordinated terrorist attack on Paris took place killing 130 people and injuring a further 368 people. This shocking news travelled the world and touched every nation.
Local resident Niamh Wood, of Platt Street, drew her own rendition of the immediately popularised Pray for Paris slogan and imagery. Niamh's beautifully crafted sketch depicts a broken Eiffel Tower in the hands of a saddened world.
She drew this two days after the attacks. On the third day the respected French newspaper, Le Monde, asked for permission to publish it and soon after, Le Figaro, the second largest circulated national French newspaper also asked if they could use it.
Well done to Niamh for her sketch being published in two French newspapers!
